8:12 pm - Loving More: Survey; and West Coast Conf. July 25-27
|
Hi all!
I have a couple of things to announce related to Loving More® Non-profit:
1) Loving More® needs YOUR opinions! What do you like about Loving More®: the magazine, the retreats, 1-day conferences, something else? What would you like to see done differently? Express your opinions in the survey on the top of the main Loving More® page: http://www.lovemore.com/
2) In other news, I was wrong about the cutoff for "regular" registration for the Loving More® West Coast conference. Turns out that late registration doesn't start till after July 1st, so you still have a few days before the next price increase. There are also payment plans, partial scholarships, and partial work-trade arrangements, to help you with the cost. It's a great conference, and Akien and I have gone every year for quite some time now. Check out more information below, including how to register.
Thanks, and I hope to see some of you in Willits!

8:56 am - Choral performance Sun. 12/9, 3pm, Piedmont Ave.
|
Hi there!
I'll be participating in a very small, somewhat informal, concert this weekend. The group I'm currently singing with (The Rhythm Society Choir) will be joining two others ("Variety Pak" and "GirlfriendZ") in giving a concert at the senior center where we rehearse. The concert is open to anyone attending.
The performance is on the 11th floor of Piedmont Gardens, at 110 41st Street (off of Piedmont) in Oakland, from 3-4pm.
The concert will feature a wide variety of music, from African spirituals to Bobby McFerrin's "23rd Psalm" (written in the feminine, and dedicated to his mother), to 40's-sounding pop and swing tunes. (AND it's a "holiday music free zone"! No Santas, no jingle bells, and no hymns to baby Jesus. Just great music (religious and non). Really, where do you want to be? With us, or in the mall listening to a tinny version of "White Christmas" piped over the sound system for the 900th time in the past 4 weeks??)
Please note that parking is VERY BAD in this neighborhood. Please allow extra time (lots!) in order to find parking. There is a lot on the corner of 41st and Piedmont that is often helpful, but last night I couldn't even find parking there. Really, plan to be early, or you will miss half of what my group will be performing! And based on the one song we got to hear by GirlfriendZ last night--you don't want to miss this! It looks like it will be pretty good, and a lot of fun.
Hope to see some of you there!

7:55 pm - Loving More Loving Choices 1-day Seminar Sat. 11/3/07, SF
|
Hi folks:
I'm very excited to tell you that on Saturday November 3, Loving More (a non-profit educational organization, for whom Akien and I share a Board seat) will be presenting a 1-day "Hotel Seminar" in San Francisco. Akien and I will be presenting 2 workshops, along with a number of other stellar presenters from the Bay Area and other areas of the country. It's the first in a series of 1-day seminars to be held around the country, aimed at those interested in polyamory and other ethically non-monogamous relationship styles. This seminar is especially suitable for newcomers to polyamory, therapists and other relationship professionals, and alternative-lifestyle-friendly folks interested in improving their communication and relationship skills. Also, if you've ever wished that you could attend one of the Loving More Retreats, but didn't have the funds for the long weekend, or if you prefer a clothes-ON environment, this seminar is a great opportunity for you.
If this sounds interesting, please read the full announcement below. If you have specific questions, you can call Robyn at 303-543-7540 (phone is better than e-mail in her case). Or you can bounce them by me in this post, and I might be able to answer them.
Please feel free to forward this announcement to any other people or lists who might be interested in exploring relationship choice and improving their relationship skills.
Best wishes to all,
Dawn

1:37 pm - Loving More Retreat DISCOUNTS!
|
Message from Akien, regarding the upcoming Loving More West Coast Retreat:
As some of you may know, I am on the board of Loving More non-profit. I've negotiated with Robyn Trask, the Director, and since we're still not up to the break-even point, and since we still need two more work trade folks, I've worked a special deal.
If you CALL Robyn at 303-543-7540, you can still get membership to all four days of the conference for $395. Work trade is available for $325. There's also now a special deal available for just the weekend part of the event as well, if you can't take time off work, for instance.
This deal is not available via the web site or other avenues. You MUST call Robyn directly at at 303-543-7540.
We love this retreat, and haven't missed one since we first went about 6 years ago. Come join us in the redwoods for a relaxing and informative weekend with hot tubs, hiking trails, great workshops, TWO Tantra events, poly-themed movies and TV episodes, delicious meals included, great conversation and excellent company (if I do say so myself!). We’d love to share the fun with more people!
Please pass this along to anyone and everyone you think might be interested in a great deal for a great conference!

5:35 pm - Update on Montel episode of 5/8
|
Hi all:
I just saw part of the Montel episode. I missed the beginning, so I don't have the whole context. But the part with Robyn et al seemed not too bad, to me. Montel was his usual urbane self. Their guest "expert" was a judge, and she was calling for everyone on the show to admit that there was something wrong with what they were doing--BUT, in a context of "even I have things that aren't good about my own choices; we all do." She applauded Montel's handling of the show with humor, and called for people to be more tolerant, specifically because if you arouse anger, people stop listening, and aren't inclined to look at their own suboptimal behavior and make changes. Montel also wrapped up with a call for tolerance and understanding that things that we formerly thought were "out in left field" are actually all around us.
So for the part I saw, I'd give it a middling grade. It could definitely have been worse, and was better than I'd anticipated given Robyn's subjective experience.
Anyone [local to me] who's got a copy of the whole thing, please let me know; I'd like to see the rest of it.

11:45 am - Montel ep. w/Robyn Trask airs today, 5/8
|
Hi all:
I wanted to give everyone a heads-up about an episode of the Montel Williams show that will be airing TODAY (4pm on KTVU Channel 2 for those who are in the SF Bay Area). Robyn Trask (head of Loving More) and her family were invited to appear. We had also discussed appearing, but due to scheduling constraints, that didn't work out. As it turns out, I'm really glad we weren't there, because Robyn reports that it was a very BAD experience for her, and possibly paints poly in a bad light. Read her report below.( Read more... )

9:06 am - Videos by an autistic person, on YouTube
|
Many of you will be aware already of the incident at Pokez restaurant in San Diego, in which the autistic son of my friend brian1789 was assaulted by a waitress there. My understanding is that Brian1789 has retained a lawyer, and that the case is proceeding. My post now is not about "getting the word out" (which has been VERY efficiently and effectively done, courtesy of the Internet), but to share with you some (I think) informative videos which shed light on some of the behaviors and language challenges that David was likely experiencing in this interaction. My post in one of the follow-up entries in Brian1789's journal is below. I highly HIGHLY recommend viewing at least the first video.
On a completely unrelated list this morning (which begs the question of how random the universe really *is*... but I digress), I came across this fascinating and informative video by an autistic person, called 'In My Language'. I highly recommend it, as it describes very clearly some of the issues that were likely at work in David's interaction with the waitress.
Even more informative on this topic are the three "Interviews With Laura" which describe several issues of language processing common for autistic persons, and also how "high functioning" autistics (such as David) are often mistaken for being belligerent when those language breakdowns occur, and are often mistaken for "not being autistic" because their deficits "aren't bad enough" and therefore they "must not be autistic." (Sound familiar?)
Interview with Laura about Autism Recovery (1 of 3) Interview with Laura about Autism Recovery (2 of 3) Interview with Laura about Autism Recovery (3 of 3)
I've not yet had the time to explore the other videos by silentmiaow, but judging by the feedback, they are likely to be informative as well. It seems to me that these four at least are sufficiently clear, concise, and informative that they might be useful in either preparing the case, or in the educational process that you are asking the restaurant to undergo.
My best to you all, as always.

9:20 am - Writing and workshops go hand in hand
|
ozarque again, this time on Writing to pay the bills.... Her suggestions for how to turn one book into a business through seminars and workshops. My experience of the few successful non-fiction writers I know says this is absolutely true. This post, and pretty much everything she's written on this topic (read back in her journal), are highly recommended.
My comment: Thank you for this. Interestingly, we've sort of done the reverse. We started by creating presentations/workshops that we've been presenting at various places. And now we need to turn one or more of them into books. Thank you for sharing your wisdom on this topic (and so many more). As usual, mere words cannot express the contributions you have made to my life.

Washington's Farewell Address, updated
Can't remember where I found this at this point, but I've found it absolutely fascinating. I highly recommend it. In fact, read all of the comments. They're long, but equally fascinating.
A couple of things buried in the comments that are particularly worth noting:
The Powerpoint Presentation of the Gettysburg Address
and
Edward Tufte did a wonderful pamphlet entitled The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint which should be required reading for anyone who uses that software for anything with technical or informational content (anything besides pure sales).
Tufte wrote an amazing book that I read early on in my career at UCB, called The Visual Display of Quantitative Information. In it is a most amazing map/graph of Napoleon's march across Europe, which shows all sorts of interesting information including the size of his army over time in graphical form ON the map. Words literally cannot convey the power of this graph/map. I HIGHLY recommend this book, and I have every intention of looking up this pamphlet. I'm sure it's fabulous.
